The Reliability of Vulnerability Management System and Messaging Security System

A networked computer system consists of one server that administers all computing tasks done within the network. Because a network system consists of numerous computers, including its server, all client computers, and millions of computers located in different parts of the world to which the server is connected through the internet, and those computers are operated by a lot of different people, the network as well as all computers within are highly vulnerable to intrusions, security breaches, and malware attacks. For this reason, a Vulnerability Management system that can assess, remediate and mitigate the vulnerability level of the network is required.

This management system uses a systematic program to prevent vulnerabilities within the network from causing problem. This program starts by defining the security policy of the network system. In this stage, policies defining the expected security state of the network system are laid out. Those policies define the access privilege rules, devices and implements that are permitted to be used in the network, and many other factors that affect the overall security state of the network environment. After those policies are laid out, the network environment is assessed to find out whether there are policy violations that occur. These violations are then to be called vulnerabilities. Those vulnerabilities are then categorized based on their severity so that prioritization of vulnerabilities mitigation can be done. After being categorized, those vulnerabilities are then mitigated according to priority order. After all vulnerabilities are mitigated, the program will monitor the environment to detect any vulnerability that recurs and to scrutinize new types of vulnerabilities that may occur. This management system thus organized an endlessly ongoing program that is beneficial in keeping the network environment perfectly secured.

Another system that is also important in maintaining the security state of a network system is Trend Micro Messaging Security system. This security system protects the network environment from threats that are sent through email messages. There are various methods that are used by this system to perform its protective duties. Firstly, it blocks emails that are received from computers whose IP address is regarded as undesirable. Secondly, it blocks malwares sent through emails by using its integrated mail antivirus system. Thirdly, it can also identify spam emails by investigating their pattern. There are many other methods that are used by this system to identify threats and to mitigate them. Installing this system on a network environment is thus an advisable effort that should be done by enterprises that use networked computer system.

Q4 2011:USA: Samsung Widens Lead in US LCD-TV Shipment. Chart.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Q4 2011:USA:  Samsung Widens Lead in US LCD-TV Shipment.

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. in the fourth quarter of 2011 solidified its leadership of the U.S. liquid-crystal display (LCD) market, as its share of unit shipments reached a record high, according to the IHS iSuppli Television Systems Service at information and analytics provider IHS (NYSE: IHS).

During the final three months of 2011, Samsung accounted for nearly one-quarter of U.S. LCD TV shipments, at 23.6 percent, as shown in the figure below. This represented the largest share of the market ever posted by Samsung on a quarterly basis, and allowed the South Korean electronics giant to pad its lead over No.2 brand VIZIO Inc. of Irvine, Calif.

“Samsung triumphed in the price war that raged in the U.S. LCD market in the fourth quarter of 2011,” said Tom Morrod, senior analyst and head of TV Technology for IHS. “The company was able to offer a range of price-competitive sets with a rich choice of features that U.S. consumers wanted. This allowed the company to outperform the competition during the all-important holiday selling season.”

In an example of how Samsung was able to capitalize on its broad range of products, the company in the fourth quarter sold two LCD TV models that were identical in every way, except that one integrated the older cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlighting—while the other employed the newer and more expensive light-emitting diode (LED) technology. This gave consumers a clear choice of features and price points.

Samsung in the fourth quarter extended its market-share lead over U.S.-based VIZIO to 8.2 percentage points, up from 6.2 points in the third quarter. Just a year earlier, in the fourth quarter of 2010, the companies’ positions were reversed, with VIZIO leading Samsung by 7.2 points.

Samsung may be positioned to further expand its lead over VIZIO in 2012 because of another factor separate from LCD-TV market dynamics.

“The recent Free Trade Agreement between the United States and South Korea will remove tariffs imposed on Korean firms selling TVs in America,” Morrod said. “Because of this accord, Samsung and fellow South Korean brand LG Electronics are poised to increase their shipments in the United States this year.”

LCD-TV Shipments Spike in the Fourth Quarter
U.S. LCD TV market shipments experienced strong sequential growth in the fourth quarter of 2011, rising by 30.7 percent compared to the third quarter.

Lower-than-expected demand and uncertainty about the U.S. economic recovery had caused LCD shipments to fall going into the second quarter. However, aggressive pricing helped boost sales at the end of the year—the time when holiday sales typically peak.

Overall average LCD TV prices in the fourth quarter fell to about $1,032, a $16 drop from the third quarter.

The strong fourth-quarter increase helped the U.S. LCD-TV market to eke out a small increase in 2011, with shipments rising to 33.4 million units for the year, up 0.4 percent frol 33.2 million in 2010.

2012: Huawei and  ZTE to ship nearly 100 million smartphones for 15% global share target.

Huawei Device and ZTE, two China-based vendors, will together ship 95-100 million smartphones for a combined global market share of 15% in 2012, according to Taiwan-based makers of handset components.

Huawei shipped 16 million smartphones to rank globally 9th and ZTE 11 million for 10th place in 2011, the sources cited Gartner statistics as indicating. Huawei and ZTE have set internal shipment targets of 60 million and 35-40 million smartphones respectively for 2012.

Huawei and ZTE have produced Android handsets for own-brand sale and on a customization basis through cooperation with mobile telecom carriers in the recent two years.

The two vendors initially lunched smartphones for sale at low to medium prices and began to make a foray into market segments of medium- to high-level smartphones in the second half of 2011.

In 2012, Huawei and ZTE will launch smartphones equipped with quad-core processors, LTE (Long Term Evolution) functionality and large screens of over 4.5 inches as well as Windows Phone-based models.

Child Safety Using Computers: MacBook Parental Controls.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Child Safety Using Computers: MacBook Parental Controls.

When setting up a MacBook for your child to use, you’ll want to take a look at parental controls for greater child safety when using the computer.

Go to System Preferences and find the parental control solution that has already been installed by default. You can use the application to control the child account’s usage. For example, you can specify which applications can be used, which URLs can be browsed, as well as the time slot your child can use the computer.

When you click on Parental Controls (the yellow icon with a parent and child), the user interface prompts will prompt you to create a child account.

After that, it prompts for a detailed policy that applies to this child account.

1. Applications – select the applications you wish to allow.

2. Browse URLs – You can block your child from visiting specific URLs.

3. Time limit
This tool can set the time limit on the child account. For example, like at most 3 hours on school days, and at most 5 hours on weekend and the child account can’t use the computer during 19:00-21:00 on a school day, etc. It is very useful to set limits automatically. Once the child account triggers the limit criteria, it will automatically lock and can only be unlocked when it passes the limit criteria.

4. Other Controls
Restrict Mail and iChat: the system will control the mail and chat communication of child account.

Logs: you can also review the child account’s activity history.

I found it to be fairly easy to set up these useful and common controls parents might want to enforce. It’s tools like this that make the MacBook a computer that can be used by whole family, and at the same time, it can make child account activities controlled by the parental account, if needed.

NAB 2012: IDC LASER™ Launches Targeted Advertising Platform.

NAB 2012: IDC LASER™ Launches Targeted Advertising Platform.

International Datacasting Corporation (TSX: IDC) announces the unveiling of a significant evolution in targeted local advertising insertion at NAB 2012, Las Vegas, April 16-19, 2012.

The new IDC LASER™ - Local Ad Splicing Edge Receiver – enables TV broadcasters to offer their advertisers regionalized targeted advertising at a price point not previously attainable. LASER enables broadcasters to increase advertising revenues by selectively and seamlessly inserting targeted regional or local commercials at the edge of the network.

In addition to local ad insertion, the platform allows for the replacement of ad content that may be unsuitable for specific audiences due to copyright issues, regional variances in culture and language, with ad content more appropriate for that target market. This additional flexibility allows broadcasters who distribute content over a wide geographic market to generate revenue from a much broader base of advertisers. Further, with its extended storage capacity, LASER can also support local or regional black-out functionality where previously distributed long form programming can be substituted on a selected local basis.

The LASER platform is comprised of three core elements:
1. The LASER satellite receiver which integrates an ad server and a frame accurate stream splicer;

2. IDC’s proven Production Manager which first distributes regionalized ad content to the network of receivers, and then uses SCTE-35 triggers to switch between the linear stream and the locally stored ad content and;

3. Ad Insertion Module (AIM) which enables an overbuild of existing legacy broadcast platforms, allowing SCTE ad insertion functionality to be seamlessly retro-fitted into a customer’s current play-out environment.

“The number of ad spots that broadcasters have available for sale is limited,” stated Frederick Godard, IDC President and CEO. “LASER provides broadcasters with a cost-effective solution for maximizing the value of each time slot by allowing advertisers to target their messages on a regional basis.”

IDC is at the forefront of delivering the content that connects broadcasters to their audiences and advertisers, for optimal efficiencies and revenue generation opportunities. Learn more about IDC’s latest technologies including the LASER targeted advertising platform, at NAB 2012, IDC Booth SU-2608.

ARM, joint ventures with Gemalto and Giesecke & Devrient, to Secure Mobile Payments.

ARM,  joint ventures with  Gemalto and Giesecke & Devrient, to Secure Mobile Payments.

ARM, the London-based company that designs the chips in most of the world’s smartphones, announced a partnership on Tuesday with  Gemalto and Giesecke & Devrient, which both make security tools for payment technologies.

They will create technical standards for a “security environment” in an area inside the chip where sensitive data is stored, processed and protected, according to Ben Haber, a spokesman representing ARM.

It means that sensitive data like your credit card information wouldn’t live in the same place as the rest of your data, and you would use payment services inside this secure area as well. This would be invisible to the everyday consumer, but if businesses embrace the standard, it could lead to a steady stream of new mobile payment services.

“The integration of the hardware, software and services necessary for system-wide security has been slow,” Warren East, chief executive of ARM, said in a statement. “I am confident that this new joint venture will accelerate the adoption of a common security standard, enabling a vibrant ecosystem of secure service providers to emerge. This will be a significant step in terms of improved consumer trust in sdcure transactions on connected devices.”

Canada: RIM to offer software to open up its secure network for use on other mobiles in the workplace.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Canada: RIM to offer software to open up its secure network for use on other mobiles in  the workplace.

Research In Motion said Tuesday that it will offer software to companies and governments that would open up its secure network for use on iPhones and other mobile devices in the workplace.

The move is intended to encourage enterprise customers to stick with its services, even if they gravitate away from the BlackBerry smartphone itself.

"Organizations face pressure to allow employees to bring their own devices into the workplace, and they are looking to RIM as the global leader in the enterprise mobility space to solve that problem," Alan Panezic, RIM's vice-president of enterprise product management and marketing said in a news release.

The Waterloo, Ont., tech company has been losing consumer market share to Apple and Android devices and although it's still dominant in workplaces, its competitors are making inroads there as well with iPhone and Android smartphones and tablets.

RIM said about 90 per cent of Fortune 500 companies are using BlackBerry smartphones.
However, recently several major organizations have confirmed plans to open up the options for their employees to use devices other than the BlackBerry.

Those customers include energy services giant Halliburton Co. and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Research In Motion has said it will focus more on its business customers and will go after only "targeted" parts of the consumer market, possibly with partners.

After releasing weak quarterly results on Thursday, the BlackBerry maker announced plans to rebuild itself and it will consider a host of corporate options, including putting itself up for sale.

China: Samsung to build a mobile chip US$7Billion factory in Xian.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

China: Samsung to build a mobile chip US$7Billion factory in Xian.

Samsung has said it will invest a total of around US$7 billion to establish a manufacturing organisation in China focusing on mobile device memory, with a factory likely to be opened in Xi’an. The investment, which has been approved by the company’s board of directors, will initially be US$2.3 billion and will total US$7 billion over the next several years.

The company said it is “considering” building a factory in Xi’an to produce 10nm-class NAND Flash memory for mobile phones and music players ”to meet growing market demand for NAND products.”

Bloomberg cites US analyst group IHS iSuppli as saying that demand for flash memory - used to store media files including photos, videos, apps and music on mobile devices – will increase by 49 percent between 2010 and 2015. By 2015, IHS iSuppli forecasts that media tablets will account for 17 percent of global NAND shipments, up from 9 percent in 2011.

Samsung produces memory for Apple’s iPhone and iPad as well as its own mobile devices. It opened a new US$10.6 billion facility making NAND flash and DRAM memory in South Korea in September and has a plant in Austin, Texas which makes memory and logic chips, including application processors for mobile phones.

It was reported in January that Samsung Group planned to invest around US$6.5 billion in smartphone and tablet chip technology this year, as part of a larger investment programme across the company.

Samsung is known for making significant investments into technologies ahead of rivals, which has translated into success with flash chips, computer memory chips and LCD flat-screens.

Colombia: Movistar and Colombia Telecomunicaciones in a merger agreement.

Telefonica Moviles Colombia (Movistar), Colombia Telecomunicaciones, and the Colombian government have reached a final agreement to restructure their fixed and mobile business in Colombia. Colombia Telecomunicaciones is 52 percent owned by Telefonica Group and 48 percent by the Colombian government.

The agreement includes, among other commitments, the assumption by the government of the 48 percent of the payment obligations not yet due of Colombia Telecomunicaciones to Parapat, the consortium which owns the telecommunications assets and manages the pension funds for the entities that comprise the National Telecommunications Operator.

The agreements reached also include an amendment to the operating contract for the extension in six years, to 2028, of the payment obligations not yet due of Colombia Telecomunicaciones to Parapat.
